Dolomite is a naturally occurring mineral, primarily found in dolostone sedimentary deposits. It is named after the French mineralogist Déodat de Dolomieu. The mineral exists in two main forms:
- True Dolomite – a chemically uniform Calcium Magnesium Carbonate (CaMg(CO₃)₂).
- Dolomitic Limestone – a mixture of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate in irregular composition.
Dolomite is formed when magnesium replaces part of the calcium in limestone during lithification, transforming layers of seashells and organic material into crystallized calcite and dolomite. The result is a stable double salt, CaMg(CO₃)₂, valued for its wide industrial applications.
