BARITE / BARYTE
Barytes / Barite By Aqeel Chemical & Processing Unit
The term Barytes is derived from the Greek word baros, meaning “heavy.” Barite is a naturally occurring mineral form of barium sulphate (BaSO?), found in various regions across the globe. It is extracted through both surface and underground mining methods.
Barite is recognized for its high specific gravity (4.2-4.5), very low solubility, non-toxic nature, and its chemically and physically non-reactive properties. It is also valued for its low abrasiveness and opaqueness to X-rays and gamma rays. These unique properties make it an important raw material for diverse industries.
At Aqeel Chemical & Processing Unit, we supply and export Barite in both lumps and powder form, ensuring quality and consistency to meet varied industrial requirements.
Applications of Barite / Baryte
Oil Well Drilling
Barite is primarily used as a weighing agent in drilling fluids. When mixed with water and other materials, it is pumped into drill holes to balance underground pressure, preventing the uncontrolled release of oil and gas.
Paper Industry
Finely processed Barite powder is used as a filler in paper production to improve whiteness, coverage, and print quality.
Cosmetics
Due to its high whiteness, smooth texture, and skin-friendly properties, Barite powder is used as a safe alternative to titanium dioxide in cosmetics.
Pigments & Paints
Barite plays a key role in producing white pigments (lithopone) and is widely used in paints, enamels, and coatings to enhance brightness, stability, and viscosity control.
Adhesives & Sealants
Barite serves as a dense, inert filler in adhesives and sealants, especially where weight and sound/radiation absorption are required.
Rubber Industry
Barite powder is used in rubber products to improve strength, resistance to chemicals and water, durability, and anti-aging properties, while also reducing production costs.
Plastic Industry
In plastics such as ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene), Barite enhances intensity, stiffness, brightness, and wear resistance.
Pharmaceuticals
Barite is used in medical applications such as barium meals for diagnostic X-rays of the stomach and intestines, as well as in pharmaceutical fillers and plaster formulations.
Other Applications
- Mixed with cement for radioactive waste storage containers
- Ingredient in rat poison
- Used in sugar refining
- Radiation shielding in medical science and electronics
- Conversion into barium carbonate for ceramic glazes and radiation-resistant glass
- Production of brake pads and clutches for the automotive industry
